Storefront Glass Installation & Repair in Chicago, IL

Chicago winters find every gap in a storefront. We repair broken and foggy glass, fix doors that leak cold air, and install new thermally broken storefronts for businesses across the city and suburbs.

What happens when you call

Talk to a glazier

Tell us what broke or what you need built. We ask about glass type, opening size, frame condition and whether the space is secure.

Make it safe, then make it right

Broken openings are boarded or temporarily glazed first. Then the opening is measured and the permanent glass is ordered to fit.

Written scope, clean records

You get a line-item estimate and photos of the damage and the finished work for your landlord or insurance carrier.

Glass entrance doors on a commercial building

Commercial glass for Chicago’s climate

Chicago storefronts are built for a climate that swings from humid summers to long, windy winters with sustained subzero cold. Glass and frames that leak air, condense or ice up make an entrance uncomfortable and expensive to heat, and freeze-thaw cycles break down sealants and gaskets year after year.

Much of the city’s retail sits in older masonry buildings along neighborhood corridors, with storefronts that were replaced decades ago or never at all. Downtown and River North add office lobbies, curtain wall and large glass entrances. We repair and replace glass in all of them.

Cold weather problems we fix

Single-pane storefront glass and non-thermally-broken aluminum frames turn cold enough in January to collect condensation and frost on the inside. Doors that no longer close tightly let snow and wind into the vestibule. Insulated units with failed seals fog over and lose most of their insulating value.

Depending on the condition of the system, the fix may be new insulated glass in the existing frame, new weatherstripping and door adjustment, or a full replacement with a thermally broken storefront and insulated low-E glass that meets the energy code.

Chicago’s building code and permits

The City of Chicago administers its own building code and permit process, separate from the suburbs, and storefront replacements and new entrances generally need a permit. Work in landmark districts can also need review by the Commission on Chicago Landmarks. Suburban work goes through the municipality where the building is.

We confirm the requirements before ordering a new storefront, so the system and glass meet the code and the permit is issued without delays.

Break-ins and emergency board-up

Smash-and-grab break-ins and vandalism hit storefronts in every part of the city. When a storefront is broken, we board up or temporarily glaze the opening the same day, clean up the glass, and document the damage for insurance. For businesses that are hit repeatedly, laminated security glass, security film and stronger door hardware make the storefront much harder to get through.

Entrances, closers and accessibility

Wind off the lake and between buildings is hard on entrance doors. Doors caught by a gust can tear pivots and closers loose. We repair and replace closers, pivots, continuous hinges and panic devices, adjust doors that drag or will not latch in the cold, and upgrade entrances to meet accessibility requirements.
