Hurricane & Impact-Rated Glass

In hurricane regions, storefronts and windows must keep the building closed when hit by wind-borne debris. We install impact-rated storefronts, doors and windows and replace impact glass in approved systems.

Commercial safety glass and glass roof

Why impact glass matters

When a hurricane breaks a storefront or window, wind rushes into the building and pressurizes it from inside, which can lift roofs and blow out walls. Impact-rated glazing is tested to resist being struck by debris and then to withstand cycles of wind pressure while staying in the frame, keeping the building envelope intact.

Code requirements

In wind-borne debris regions defined by the building code, exterior glazing must be impact-resistant or protected by approved shutters or panels. Florida’s High-Velocity Hurricane Zone, Miami-Dade and Broward counties, has the strictest testing and approval requirements, and products used there need an approval accepted in the HVHZ, such as a Miami-Dade Notice of Acceptance. Other coastal regions have their own requirements.

Impact systems, not just impact glass

  • The glass is laminated, often laminated insulated, with a strong interlayer.
  • The frame, glazing method and anchors are part of the tested assembly.
  • Installation must follow the product approval’s details.
  • Replacement glass must match the approved glass make-up.

Replacing impact glass

Impact glass that is cracked still holds the opening closed but must be replaced. We identify the system and approval, order matching glass, and reglaze with the approved method, whether structural silicone, glazing tape or wet seal.

Hurricane & Impact-Rated Glass questions

Do not see your question? Call and talk to a glazing specialist.

If your building is in a wind-borne debris region, exterior glazing must be impact-resistant or protected by approved shutters.

Usually not. Impact performance depends on the whole tested system, so the frame must be part of an approved assembly.

A product approval showing a system has passed the High-Velocity Hurricane Zone tests, with installation requirements.

Yes. It has done its job but no longer has full strength and should be replaced.
