Glass Railings
Glass railings keep views open on stairs, mezzanines, balconies and atriums while meeting guard requirements. We install commercial glass railing systems inside and out.
Railing systems
- Base shoe systems with the glass set in a continuous aluminum channel, for a frameless look.
- Standoff or point-supported systems with glass fixed to the edge of the slab or stringer.
- Post-supported systems with glass infill panels between metal posts.
- Top rails and handrails added as required by code or design.
Code requirements for guards
Glass used in guards must be safety glazing and is generally required to be laminated tempered or laminated heat-strengthened glass, so that if one ply breaks the panel stays in place. Guards must meet minimum heights, resist specified loads, and have no openings large enough for a small sphere to pass through. Some systems require a top rail. We supply engineered systems with the documentation the building department asks for.
Structural attachment
A glass railing is only as strong as what it is attached to. Base shoe and standoff systems put concentrated loads on slab edges and stringers, which need adequate structure and embedment. We coordinate the attachment details with the general contractor and engineer before installation.
Exterior railings
Exterior glass railings on balconies and rooftop decks must also resist wind loads and handle drainage and corrosion. We specify hardware and finishes suited to the exposure.

Glass Railings questions
Do not see your question? Call and talk to a glazing specialist.
Does railing glass have to be laminated?
Codes generally require laminated safety glass in guards so the panel stays in place if a ply breaks.
Do glass railings need a top rail?
It depends on the system and the code edition. Some engineered systems allow no top rail.
Can glass railings be used outdoors?
Yes, with systems designed for wind loads and corrosion-resistant hardware.
What is a base shoe railing?
A frameless railing where the glass is clamped in a continuous metal channel at the floor.
